SUSTAINABILITY- WHAT? WHEN? WHERE?
SUSTAINABLE FASHION- WHAT? WHEN? WHERE?
Sustainable fashion is a movement and process of fostering change to fashion products and the fashion system towards greater ecological integrity and social justice. Sustainable fashion concerns more than just addressing fashion textiles or products. It comprises addressing the whole system of fashion. This means dealing with interdependent social, cultural, ecological, and financial systems.
The origins of the sustainable fashion movement started with those of the modern environmental movement, and specifically the publication in 1962 of the book Silent Spring by American biologist Rachel Carson.
Patagonia and Esprit began pioneering sustainable clothing in the late 1980s, as their founders observed the negative environmental impacts of the clothing manufacturing industry.
SUSTAINABLE BRANDS:
Sustainability is not just a destination it is a journey. It is a process which could never end at some point of time. The whole idea revolves around what little steps are we taking towards it. So what makes a brand sustainable? Growing plants, saving water, using natural fibres, labor protection, less chemicals usage? According to me you don't have to follow each and every aspect or sustainability, I call it a successful sustainable brand. Now let's look at how the Indian brand- KHADI -THE HIGHLY SUSTAINABLE BRAND.
KHADI:
While mill-made cloth is essential to satisfy the textile demands of the Indian market, khadi is a precious craft deeply intertwined with India's story. More importantly, it is highly sustainable. The spinning of khadi uses no machines or energy and thus has a low carbon footprint.
MATERIALS USED:
Khadi is a term used for fabrics that are hand-spun and handwoven, usually from cotton fiber. However, contrary to popular belief, khadi is also manufactured from silk and wool, known as khadi silk or woolen khadi respectively.
The cloth is usually woven from cotton however it may also include silk or wool, which are all spun into yarn on a spinning wheel called a charkha. It is a versatile fabric, cool in summer and warm in winter. In order to improve its looks, khādī/khaddar is sometimes starched to give it a stiffer feel.
PRODUCTION:
Khadi is made by hand in homes in Indian villages, using a cotton yarn spun on a wheel, or "charkha". Some varieties of Khadi fabric use silk or woolen yarns depending on the region where it is spun. This is a wonderful fabric that is woven with the utmost respect to the environment and can be used in summer or in winter.
OBJECTIVE:
Gandhi JI saw khadi as a source to help the poor living in villages to earn a living. He saw khadi as a self-sufficient material. This became a movement that aimed at boycotting foreign goods and promoting the Indian goods which would intern boost the Indian economy. This movement gave birth to swaraj.
To plan, promote, facilitate, organize and assist in the establishment and development of khadi and village industries.
REVIEW:
According to me KHADI as an Indian brand is started a great initiative of being sustainable and using eco- friendly methods. Also by providing KHADI to rural areas, employment has started increasing by which their standard of living has also started improving. Also boycotting foreign products and being all Indian is something we should opt for our better future.
